Jesus: "Are you trusting in Me or the boat?"
READ: Mark 4:35-41
"How Can You Be So Calm?"

One of my favorite hymns as a teen was "Peace, Be Still" in the old Broadman Hymnal. In the song, the disciples say, "Carest Thou not that we perish? How canst Thou lie asleep, when each moment so madly is threatening a grave in the angry deep?" Have you ever wanted to say that to God? "How can you sleep at a time like this?" Have you ever felt He was unaware or unconcerned about the mess you were in (or the mess you ARE in)? I know I have.

When Jesus was awakened by His panicked disciples, He chided them. "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?" It was as if He was saying, "What are you trusting in? This boat? Or Me?" Don't you know that 'no water can swallow the ship where lies the Master of ocean and earth and skies?"

The key issue is not how bad your "storm" might be but whether the Master is in the same "boat." If He is your Savior and Lord -- if you have welcomed Him into your life, then He is in your "boat." And He will never leave you or forsake you.

The wind and waves immediately responded to the rebuke from Jesus. The Rockheads' panic turned to shear panic. "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"
REFLECT:
1. Is the Master in your "boat"? Do you feel like He is awake or asleep or absent?

2. Do you believe Jesus could walk a tightrope strung across Niagara Falls pushing a wheelbarrow? Really? Would you be willing to climb into the wheelbarrow and cross with Him?

RESPOND:
" 'Master the tempest is raging. The billows are tossing high. The sky is o'er-shadowed with blackness. No shelter or help is nigh.' But You are with me in the boat to comfort, to guide, and to protect me. Teach me to trust You without any wavering. Teach me to fear You more than I fear the storm."
